One of the most famous pilgrimage destinations
of Nepal is Gosain Kunda Lake, which is ituated
at an altitude of about 4,380m. on the Langtang
trekking trail. The best approach to Gosain
Kunda is through Dhunche, 132 kms to the northeast
of Kathmandu. Dhunche is linked with Kathmandu
by a motorable road. Surrounded by high mountains
on the north and south. Gosain Kunda Lake is
believed to have been created by Lord Shiva
when the thrust his trident into a mountain
to draw water so that he could cool his burning
throats after swallowing poison. There is a
large rock at the center of the lake, which
said to be the remains of a Shiva shrine. There
are more than 100 lakes around it such as Saraswati,
Bhairav, Surya Kunda and Ganesh Kunda etc to
explore. These lakes are destinations for thousands
of Hindu pilgrimage visit the lake area during
‘Janaipurnima’ festival in the month
of August. This lake is also scared to the Buddhist.
